The Castle
The oldest Castle in Britain to be lived in by the same family for nearly 900 years.Once a Norman Castle, now a comfortable family home. Visit the Norman Keep which contains the dungeon and King Edward II’s Cell, where he was murdered; through Mediaeval kitchens, and the Great Hall where the Barons of the West Country gathered before Magna Carta, into the softer and more elegant State Apartments.
The Gardens
The Castle is surrounded by eight acres of landscaped gardens, including Queen Elizabeth I’s bowling green, sweeping lawns, terraces and the 8th Earl’s swimming pool. Enjoy the fabulous collection of roses, huge magnolia trees and scented borders, as well as other specialist plants and shrubs, in this majestic setting.
Tropical Butterfly House
Located within the old walled kitchen garden, tropical species fly freely in this tranquil oasis; some of which are bred here. Experience the entire life cycle of these beautiful creatures making their transition from chrysalis to butterfly. The Butterfly House is open from May to September and includes a picnic area in the adjacent rose garden
Shops & Tea Room
The Castle boasts two shops. The Butterfly House Shop contains children’s gifts and many butterfly themed collectibles, whereas the Castle Gift Shop stocks beautiful gifts and souvenirs inspired by the Castle and its contents.Homemade cakes are a speciality in the Castle Tea Room. Located within the domestic quarters of the Castle, the Tea Room serves delicious snacks and light lunches every day the Castle is open.
