Weardale Railway

Bishop Auckland, Durham

Weardale Railway
Weardale is the heart of the North Pennines and is probably the least known major dale of the English uplands. The views are magnificent and unspoilt; the area is also known for its footpaths and bridleways, and the Weardale Railway will allow you to enjoy it all unhindered by traffic. The railway also provides a useful base for walks between stations along the banks of the beautiful and gentle river Wear.Your journey will take you at a leisurely pace beside the river with magnificent views of the dale. The gift shop is situated in the main station building at Stanhope and is well stocked with gifts, souvenirs and postcards to suit all pockets from a few pence to a few pounds and is open half an hour before the first train and up to half an hour after the last train each day the railway is running. The station buffet, like the gift shop is open half an hour before the first train and up to half an hour after the last train each day the railway is running. It serves a mix of hot and cold drinks, light snacks and sweets and during the summer months ice cream too.
