Wisbech & Fenland Museum

Wisbech & Fenland Museum is one of the oldest purpose-built museums in the country, located in an attractive part of the historic Fenland market town of Wisbech, close to St Peter’s Church and the fine Georgian Crescent. Founded in 1835 the Museum Society was located in the Old Market, but its growing collections of natural science specimens, local and foreign antiquities, ethnography and a range of curios meant the premises were soon outgrown. A new building was constructed and opened its doors in 1847.

The well-preserved and splendid main and upper galleries of the Museum display a remarkable collection of rare and eclectic artefacts, representing both local and worldwide history, recent and ancient. Complete with most of its original furniture, the Museum is a treasure house where visitors can step back in time to the heyday of the Victorian museum.

From regular art exhibitions and natural science displays to the Anti-Slavery campaigner Thomas Clarkson’s travelling chest and notable Egyptian and Roman antiquities, the wide-ranging selection here ensures
there is something to interest everyone.
